Burlington County College believes in the value of service as a component of the learning process and encourages Service Learning in a variety of courses.  Students who participate in Service Learning are actively molding their own educational experience at the same time as they contribute to their community and become knowledgeable and engaged citizens.

During the Spring '00 semester, students from 10 courses gave approximately 2055 hours of their time to numerous community organizations and agencies.  The students in an average class with a Service Learning component gave approximately 386 hours of their time in service to nonprofit agencies. What is Service Learning?

For Students

A Sampling of Participating Agencies: BCC is currently working with over 50 local agencies and schools. Anyone interested in utilizing these services or sharing new contacts within the community, please contact Pat Kalata (X. 7621).
Many students have continued their service beyond the time of a particular course, some continuing in another course and many without receiving course credit.  Some students have been offered paying positions with service learning organizations.  Many supervisors indicated their willingness to have other students from BCC work in their organization in the future.  An added benefit for students was often glowing letters of appreciation and recommendation that students could send to transfer colleges and to employers.
In addition, various student organizations have a service requirement.  For more information, contact PTK, the honor society for community college students, Circle K and the Minority Students  Union.
