STUDENT RIGHT TO KNOW AND CAMPUS SECURITY ACT

BCC Public Safety Department Tipline: Dial Extention 1111

Working together, safely at Burlington County College is everyone's business. No community, of course, can be totally risk-free in today's society. Students, faculty, staff and visitors are partners in creating an atmosphere that is safe and conducive to learning.

Burlington County College maintains a Public Safety Department with personnel available 24 hours a day. A person may report any criminal action or any other emergency at any time by calling (609) 894-9311, Ext. 1100, or by coming in person to the Campus Public Safety Department.

ACCESS TO CAMPUS FACILITIES

Buildings

Most campus buildings are open from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. All Burlington County College students and employees must exhibit identification cards on outer garments at all times. Individuals who need to be in campus buildings or other areas not during regularly scheduled work hours must obtain permission for that date and time from the department supervisor and submit written notification to the Public Safety Department.

Many campus rooms and areas are protected by intrusion alarms. Before entering such areas, the Public Safety Department must be called.

It is the responsibility of those who use rooms, offices and areas to lock doors, turn off lights, and close windows. The Public Safety Department will check these areas on campus during off hours, but the primary responsibility for security lies with the user.

Keys/Card Access

Keys are provided to individual staff members on a need-to-enter basis as determined by the appropriate supervisor. Lost keys must be reported immediately the Public Safety Department. Keys should never be loaned to other staff members or students. Public Safety personnel will confiscate any keys, which have not been specifically issued to a particular individual. Unauthorized duplication of college keys is a crime and a violation of college policy.

College Property

No college property may be removed from campus without the expressed written permission from the department supervisor. Unauthorized removal of college property from the campus is a violation of the institution’s policy and/or a violation of law and may be prosecuted by the College.

Student/Staff Identification Cards

All college faculty, staff and students taking classes at Burlington County College must obtain an identification card. The ID card is your official college identification card and should be with you at all times while on college property. The ID card must be validated each semester you are registered. You may obtain that validation sticker at any Public Safety Office. There is a charge of $5.00 for replacement ID cards. The fee will be charged to your student account.

CRIME PREVENTION

One of the essential ingredients of any successful crime prevention program is an informed public. It is the intent of Burlington County College to inform students and staff, in a timely manner, of any criminal activity or problems, which may pose a reasonable threat to their physical safety. Staff members are informed through in-house memos, emails, voice mail or bulletins.

Daily Crime Log

The Department of Public Safety maintains a Daily Crime Log that records, by the date the incident was reported to us, all crimes and other incidents that occur on campus.

The Daily Crime Log is available for public inspection. The Daily Crime Log includes the nature, date, time, and general location of each crime reported to us, as well as the disposition of the complaint, if that is known at the time the log is created.
The Burlington County College Public Safety Department supplies various pamphlets on crime prevention, as well as presentations during orientation. These may be obtained from the Public Safety Department.

Finally, all effective crime prevention programs include some measures of people watching out for one another. All staff and students are asked to be ALERT, SECURITY CONSCIOUS and INVOLVED. Call the Public Safety Department whenever you see suspicious behavior.

Timely Warning Notices (Campus Crime Alerts)

To help prevent crimes or serious incidents, the Department of Public Safety, in conjunction with other departments on campus, issues Campus Crime Alerts in a timely manner to notify the college community members about crimes in and around our community. Anyone aware of an incident or crime occurring on or about Campus is encouraged to contact the Public Safety Department as soon as possible so that a Crime Alert Bulletin may be sent out.

Timely Warning Notices are made by use of e-mail and through the use of in-house monitors and flyers.

Workplace Violence

To ensure the safety and security of the workplace, Burlington County College implemented the following policy. Threats and/or threatening behavior, or acts of violence by employees against staff members, faculty, students or visitors on Campus or while in the conduct of college business off Campus, are cause for removal from the workplace and may result in discipline and/or termination of employment.

Reporting

All members of the college community who become aware of, or believe that he or she has witnessed an incident of violent or threatening behavior should immediately report the incident to the Department of Public Safety.

If the employee believes that someone is in imminent danger, the employee MUST immediately contact the Public Safety Department while on Campus. In the event an incident is witnessed off Campus, the employee MUST call 911 and report the incident.

CRIME STATISTICS

Statistics concerning the occurrence on campus of the following crimes are available to the public on the Public Safety web page Murder, Rape, Robbery, Assault, Burglary, Theft, Motor Vehicle Theft, Drug/Alcohol Abuse Violations and Weapons Possessions.

The Student Right to Know and Campus Security Act amended FERPA to allow institutions to disclose to the victim of an alleged crime of violence the results of a disciplinary proceeding brought against a student accused of the crime, without the prior consent of the accused. This disclosure is limited to the alleged victim, who should be informed that the information might not be disclosed to the public generally (20 USC Section 1232g(b) (6)).
