CIS 101 WebBoard
WebBoard Rules
The WebBoard provides a forum for discussion, class participation and a place to get answers to your questions. In many ways, the Internet provides richer opportunities for discussion than a face to
face class. Comments and responses to questions are more thoughtful and
less "off the cuff." Your instructor may be participating and will be
keeping track of your participation in this forum. You are expected to participate and interact with your peers in this class. I tolerate some debate, but I also expect
that you will follow common sense rules of good taste, manners, politeness,
and "netiquette." Remember, the WebBoard is an extension of out classroom, and the same rules apply here as on campus!
Some suggestions:
- Use proper, formal grammar, spelling, capitalization and punctuation. Even though common elsewhere on-line, abbreviations such as "u" for you and "ur" for your are discouraged in an academic environment.
- Be especially careful about your diction and tone; irony and humor
aren't always understood.
- Clear communication of your intention and meaning depend entirely on
your choice and arrangement of words - choose your words and sentence structures carefully.
- Do not type all capitals, which is difficult to read and has come to
be considered the electronic version of "shouting." Likewise, typing in all lower case is not proper in the English language.
- Do be courteous, even when you disagree, and always provide clear,
logical support for your views.
- Always provide a clear context for your messages: appropriate subject
lines and enough information in the message itself to establish clearly
the situation about which you are writing.
- Your subject line should be short but specific: "Question about Floppy Disk Formatting" rather than "Question" or "Help".
- In the message give some background information if necessary.
- Avoid reposting long previous messages: paraphrase them instead (identifying
the original sender) or quote excerpts (identifying the original sender
and the fact that they are excerpts).
- Always follow all specific directions and criteria provided by your professor.
- As a member of the academic community, you are expected to conduct
yourself in person, in print, and on line in a responsible way and in the
spirit of courteous educational inquiry. Of course, you are expected to
abide by the policies of the college and the laws of the state and the
country.
