There
are many different tools available for searching the Internet and the
World Wide Web. Here are a few of the better known ones:
Alta
Vista - Searches for words or phrases on the World Wide Web or in
Usenet newsgroups.
Argus Clearinghouse (formerly
known as the Clearinghouse for Subject-Oriented Internet Resource Guides)
- Links to “topical guides which identify, describe, and evaluate
Internet-based information resources,” including Web pages, listservs,
Usenet groups, and Gopher and FTP sites. Resources are rated by librarians.
Ask Jeeves - Ask Jeeves about any subject.
C/NET - There are about 250 search
engines to use on this powerful site.
Dogpile - A multi-engine search
tool, which does searches beginning with subject directories that give
more focused results and then moving on to search engines which, while
not as focused, return more results.
EDU2: Education and Courses - Title
is slightly deceptive, as this is really a subject directory with links
to a wide variety of subjects, a number of which are course-related.
Excite - Allows you to search the
Web or Usenet by keyword(s) and broadens your search by looking for ideas
closely linked to the words in your query.
Google - Uses text-matching techniques
to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search.
Go - Formerly Infoseek, this search engine
allows you to search Web pages or Usenet postings by keyword(s), as well
as Web FAQs, a directory of email addresses and a company directory. There
are also useful lists of links to quick references and lists of links
by subject.
HotBot - Allows you to search the
Web or Usenet by keyword(s), exact phrases or Boolean search terms.
Lycos - A huge and very popular catalog
of Web resources. Search by keyword.
Opentext - Opentext allows you
to search every word in a Web document, not just key words. Opentext also
shows you your search terms in context (very useful for determining relevance).
Like some other search tools, Opentext allows you to search for email
addresses and has a listing of rated sites.
Netscape
Search - Combines results from the Netcenter, Open Directory and the
Web.
Northern Light Search - Searches
the entire Web and also a Special Collection consisting of information
