Egyptian Kingdom - January 3 - 12



 

The anticipated application deadline is October 15, 2000.



Professors Jayne Yantz and Carole Gavin are planning a ten-day trip for course credit to Egypt.  The cost of students under ages 25 (as of January 12, 2001) $1886,  for students ages 25 or over (as of January 12, 2001) $2321.
 

Credit will be available for the following courses:

The Art of Egypt - 3 credits
French 101-102-201-202 - 3 credits for Beginning or Intermediate French

Itinerary

Day 1-2 - Fly to Egypt  - Fly aboard a jet to Cairo; meet your tour director and transfer to your hotel

Day 3     - Pyramids - The Sphinx Your full-day excursion begins in Memphis, which dates back to 3200 B.C. Next stop is Sakkara, where many of the pharaohs are buried.  Continue on to Giza to view the Great Pyramid of Cheops, the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world that still stands!  See the beguiling 4500-year-old Sphinx and marvel at the funerary Temple of Chephren.

Day 4    - Cairo sights - Your guided tour of Cairo takes you to spectacular mosques, monument and minarets.  You'll also visit the Egyptian Museum, where you can admire the extraordinary treasures of King Tutankhamen and other pharaonic treasures.  You'll also haggle for a good price at the Bazaars of Hana el-Khalili before boarding a night train for Luxor.

Day 5-8    Nile Cruise - Arrive in Luxor (City of Castles) to embark on an unforgettable four-day cruise.  As you travel along the Nile, you'll visit some of Egypt's most captivating sights, including Tutankhamon's tomb in the famed Valley of the Kings.  View the Colossi of Memnon and Queen Hatchepsur's uniquely terraced tombs at Deir el-Bahari.  Stop in Karnak, a monumental city of temples.  Here you can see royal courts, papyrus columns, and colossal statures of kings.  Journey down the Avenue of Sphinxes before viewing the awe-inspriing Temple of Luxor.  continue to Edfu.  see the 2000-year-old Temple of Horus (the Sund God).  Sail to Kom Ombo, view Elephantine Island, and visit the Agha Khan Mausoleum by felucca (sailing boat).  Arriving in Aswan at the end of your cruise, you'll see the High Dam, a modern marve, and granite quarries of Aswan, from which ancient Egyptians obtained materials for their temples.

Day 9       Return to Cairo In Aswan, board your return flight to Cairo.

Day 10     Depart on Day 10, or stay for a three-day extension (+$275).
