information technology as one of the 20 fastest growing occupations in the US.
The growth of managed care has created additional job opportunities for health
information professionals. Local, regional, and national positions are
available to entry-level graduates and Registered Health Information
Technicians.
What is Health Information Technology
Patient
information is used for patient care, health planning, quality assurance,
medical research, professional education and financial reimbursement. A Health
Information Technician is a health care professional trained in the collection,
analysis, processing and use of this information. As an HIM professional you
will be called upon by all members of the health care community to assist them
in the delivery of quality health care.

Health
Information Technicians work in hospitals, long- term care facilities,
psychiatric facilities, ambulatory care centers, insurance companies,
physicians offices, state, local and federal health agencies. As health information management
practice evolves to align itself with changes in the healthcare delivery system

The Role of the Health Information Technician
Health
Information Technicians perform a variety of technical health information
functions. They:
· Code and classify data for
reimbursement
· Organize, analyze and evaluate information
necessary for decision support
· Provide information security to protect
patient privacy
· Provide data for use within the
healthcare community
· Comply with standards and regulations
regarding health information
· Prepare health data for accreditation
surveys
· Analyze clinical data for research and
public policy
BCC’s Health Information Technology Program
The
Health Information Technology Program at Burlington County College is
accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and
Information Management Education (CAHIIM) in cooperation with the Council on
Accreditation of the American Health Information Management Association.
Credentialed instructors bring practical knowledge and to provide education in
the development, maintenance, and use of patient health information in the
classroom and lab setting. Graduates of the Associate of Applied Science degree
program are eligible to sit for the American Health
Information Management Association's credentialing exam for
qualification as an Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
