Director of Health Information Technology
Susan P. Scully, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P
Susan P. Scully, MS, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P is the Director of Burlington County College’s (BCC) Health Information Technology (HIT) program. Ms. Scully joined BCC full-time in 2000. She has a degree in Medical Office Assisting from BCC and has been in the healthcare field since 1980. After working in patient care for several years, her interests turned to medical records. She earned her associate’s degree in Health Information Technology (HIT) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Independent Study program and BCC, and in 2005, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Administration from Stephens College and attained the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential. She completed her master's degree in Health Information Management (HIM) with a certificate in Healthcare Informatics in July 2013 at the College of St. Scholastica.
Ms. Scully has specialized in coding since 1988 and earned her Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential in 1992 and the Certified Coding Specialist-Professional (CCS-P) certification in 1998. She began her career in the HIM department at Deborah Heart and Lung Center as a microfilm clerk and worked her way up to become the Coding Supervisor in 1987.
An advocate for education in health information and patient access to health information, she is actively involved in the New Jersey Health Information Management Association (NJHIMA) serving as a committee member, secretary, director/delegate, and president (2008-2009). Ms. Scully was named the Distinguished Member of NJHIMA in 2010.
Currently, Ms. Scully teaches several courses in the Health Information Technology program including: HIT 110: Professional Practice I, HIT 212: Professional Practice II, and HIT 208: Reimbursement Methodologies. She is also an AHIMA approved trainer for ICD-10.
Ms. Scully is the co-chair of the NJ Department of Banking and Insurance Implementation Committee for ICD-10 and has frequently spoken on the topic. She is also actively involved in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) initiative and has participated in numerous events related to EHR.
