WHAT IS THE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)?

The global positioning system (GPS) is a radio-based navigation system that includes a constellation of satellites and ground resources. Specialized devices can intercept and interpret the signals emitted by the satellites to calculate a position on the surface of the earth. The advent of the GPS system has greatly enhanced navigation of cars, trucks, ships, and even individuals as well as increased the capacity for spatial analysis of various features.

The GPS system is in wide use today. Many people are aware of the benefits of the GPS system for navigation, but few are aware of the contribution GPS makes toward spatial analysis. By accurately locating and marking certain features, users can potentially recognize patterns or relationships between features with assistance from the GPS system. Position data acquired through the GPS system can be integrated into GIS-based projects, enhancing our ability to analyze features and their relationships.
