Assignment Guidelines (External Organization) (4 points)

Is the paper typed, double-spaced with one-inch margins, stapled (not “clipped”), and between 750-1000 words? Does it include a cover page with name, date, word count, and argumentative title specific to the paper’s thesis? Is it submitted (along with all previous essays) in the folder with this feedback log stapled inside the folder?

 

 

 

 

Introduction, Body, Conclusion, and Transitions (Internal Organization) (6 points)

Does an effective hook move toward the thesis? Can the reader distinguish one essay section from another? Could sections be clearer or more effective?

Thesis (4 points)

Does the essay contain a clearly-stated argumentative thesis with a claim and points to be developed? Is the essay unified (the thesis leading logically to the support)? Is the opening more than an announcement? Is the thesis located appropriately?

 

 

 

 

Support (6 points)

Do examples stray from or contradict the thesis? Are examples logically presented, indicating patterns of organization? Can the reader easily identify and distinguish between examples? Are all points coherent? Is there sufficient support? Is the tone too casual for an academic essay? Does the writing fit the tone and purpose of the essay?

 

 

 

 

—DICTION AND MECHANICS

 

 

 

 

Sentence Construction / Fragments / Comma Splices / Fused Sentences (4 points)

Do any sentences begin with a coordinating conjunction? Are there subordinate clauses, prepositional phrases, or verb phrases posing as sentences? Are there fused sentences or comma splices?

 

 

 

 

Agreement / Point of View / Verb Use (2 points)

Is the point of view consistent and appropriate? Are subject and object case pronouns used correctly? Do subjects agree with their verbs? Are verb tenses consistent? Do pronouns agree with their antecedents?

 

 

 

 

General Punctuation and Capitalization (2 points)

Are commas used incorrectly or inappropriately? Are periods and commas located inside quotation marks? Are there too many exclamation points? Are colons and semi-colons used appropriately? Are standard rules of capitalization followed?

 

 

 

 

Usage and Diction / Spelling / Word Choice / Proofreading (2 points)

Is the writing wordy, lacking in clarity? Are words vague or over-generalized? Does the writing reflect careful thought and description? Are there many misused words or phrases? Is there an accumulation of small errors—misspellings, poor word choice or wordiness? Do the errors reflect a lack of preparation, laziness or sense of carelessness of the writer?
