ESL 076 ESL Writing I

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to write paragraphs(100-150 words) which have:

  • A clear and limited topic sentence focused on tone idea.
  • Clear sufficient, relevant, specific and concrete examples
  • Correct beginning grammar using simple present, present progressive, simple past and past progressive verbs.
  • Subject/verb and pronoun/antecedent agreement.
    Appropriate punctuation.
  • Correct simple sentence structure with acceptable syntax.
    An appropriate concluding sentence.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of beginning grammar, usage, and sentence structure by identifying errors of:
    • Simple present, present progressive, simple past and progressive verbs.
    • Subject/verb and pronoun/antecedent agreement.
    • Appropriate punctuation.


    ESL 077 ESL Writing II

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to write essays (300 words) which have:

  • Appropriate opening comments
  • A thesis statement that states the central idea
  • A plan that previews the points to be covered
  • Body paragraphs of concretes support
  • Clear and limited topic sentences that relate to the thesis and plan
  • Correct intermediate grammar using
  • Present perfect, present perfect progressive, future, verbs
  • Modals
  • Gerunds/infinitives
  • A variety of sentence styles and types
  • Conclusion that reinforces the thesis
  • Demonstrate knowledge of intermediate grammar usage, sentence structure by identifying errors of:

    Present perfect, present perfect progressive, future, verbs
    Modals
    Gerunds/infinitives

    ESL 078 ESL Writing III

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to write essays (500 words) which have:

  • Appropriate opening comments
  • Appropriate transitions
  • A thesis statement that states the central idea
  • A plan that previews the points to be covered
  • Body paragraphs of clear, relevant, specific, and concrete support
  • Clear and limited topic sentences that relate to the thesis and plan
  • Correct advanced grammar using
  • Compound/complex sentence structures
  • Time clauses
  • Phrasal verbs and verb-preposition combinations
  • Possessives and general quantifiers
  • Progressive and perfect gerunds/infinitives
  • A variety of sentence styles and types
  • Unity,coherence, agreement, and consistency
  • A conclusion that reinforces the thesis
  • Correct format

Demonstrate knowledge of advanced grammar, usage, sentence structure by identifying errors of:

  • Compound/complex sentence structures
  • Time clauses
  • Phrasal verbs and verb-preposition combinations
  • Possessives and general quantifiers
  • Progressive and perfect gerunds/infinitive
