Educational Standards

    Standards for Teachers

There is a movement to create nationwide teaching standards to be met by anyone planning on teaching any level of education. Currently, the standards most being discussed are a required G.P.A. for education majors and a national teacher certification exam.
New Jersey is examining a teacher standard for all levels, including preschool, since the state is now requiring preschool for all children in  the designated special needs districts ( the Abbot districts).  There is already a National Teacher's Certification available.www.nbpts.org

    Standards for Students

Many states use standardized tests to measure the progress of  students as well as the effectiveness of various teaching methods. These include the lowas, the Californias and the PSATs and SATs.
The New Jersey Department of Education has created seventeen standards and the goals for each for three grade levels : fourth grade, eighth grade and the end of high school, twelfth grade. These can be found on the New Jersey Department of Education website.  http://www.state.nj.us/njded/cccs/index.html

   Online Testing

There are more and more online tests available for educators.  Many are designed to give immediate feedback to students.  One of these is Vantage Learning's IntelliMetric essay scoring technology.  Be careful in selecting online testing materials.
