What is College Bound?

Description
The College Bound program funded by the Commission on Higher Education targets 60 high school students from the districts of Burlington City and Pemberton Township. The grant supports pre-college educational and enrichment activities to ensure that students complete high school and successfully pursue post-secondary careers in math, science, or technology. Grant funds are designated to provide on-campus programs during the summer and enrichment educational activities and workshops during the academic year.

During the summer, junior and senior students are enrolled in a 3-credit course, plus additional supplemental courses including college study skills. Students in their sophomore year are enrolled in enrichment courses such as Creative Writing, Statistics, Human Ecology, Computer Animation and Study Skills. All students involved with the program are exposed to various field trips which include one college visit during the summer. The summer academic course work varies from year to year providing new and exciting learning opportunities for students. Students also receive a momentary stipend upon completion of the summer program. During the academic year, students are provided academic advisement, tutoring, career exploration, financial aid information, additional college field trips and leadership conferences. College mentors and tutors serve as role models throughout the program.

Audience
The program is appropriate for male/female students entering 10th, 11th and 12th grade who demonstrate academic potential, interest, and commitment to the program.

Program Evaluation
Successful high school graduation and acceptance to post-secondary institutions will determine program effectiveness.

Costs
The program is funded through a grant from the Commission on Higher Education and contributions from Burlington County College.
