Don't know the first step as a new or transfer student?
New student? (1) Apply to BCC; ( 2) Submit HS transcript
to BCC; (3) Schedule an assessment of English, Reading and
Math skills; (4) If placed in developmental classes, register for these
classes that will prepare students to read college level textbooks and
to write college level papers, critiques or essay type test questions required
in ASL 101 and ASL 103. If placed at a college level, register for College
Composition I (ENG101), Elementary American Sign Language I (ASL101), and
Deafness & Culture (ASL-103)
NOTE: (1) ENG101 must be taken prior to or along with ASL103.
(2) ASL101 & ASL 103 are corequisites which means that both MUST be
taken during the SAME semester.

Can a student take just ASL 101 (Elementary American Sign Language
I)?
No. ASL 103 (Deafness & Culture) MUST be taken during
the same semester. NOTE: ENG 101 (College Composition
I) is a corequisite to ASL 103. Non-credited ASL courses are offered
through BCC's Adult Enrichment
Does a BCC certificate mean that I am "certified" as an interpreter?
No.
Who certifies interpreters?
The NJ Division of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (NJDDHH) has a screening
process; the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) has a certifying
process. More info can be obtained by contacting them or the NJ Registry
of Interpreters for the Deaf (NJRID).
Must students take the College Assessment Test and developmental
classes in English, Reading & Math?
Yes. Completion of developmental classes is necessary. ENG 101
must be taken prior to or concurrent with ASL 103. This is important
for your success since college level papers are required in ASL 103.
What sequence of courses are recommended?

Are there prerequisites to take ASL 101 (Elementary American Sign
Language I) and ASL 103 (Deafness & Culture)?
Yes, to assure your success in completing the college level papers
that are required in ASL 103, you must take the College Assessment Test.
If you are placed in remedial composition, enroll and pass it. ENG
101 College Composition I must be taken prior to or concurrent with ASL
103 (which is a corequisite to ASL 101).
Can any student take ASL 101 and ASL 103?
No, ENG 101 College Composition I must be taken prior to or along with
ASL 103. Remember to register for both
ASL 101 and ASL 103 during the same
semester since they are corequisites.
Can nursing, business, criminal justice majors take ASL courses?
Yes.
When will the IE classes be offered?
They were offered now, but ASL 101, 102, 103, 104, & 201 are prerequisites.
Can ASL 101, 102, 103 104 be taken before declaring an ASL/IE major?
Yes, but it is recommended that students declare
these majors ASAP.
