COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

THR 106 Fundamentals of Acting II  3cr.

 

Continuation of fundamentals learned in THR 105.

Prerequisite:  THR 105 or permission.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1.      Analyze a script for key ideas.

 

2.      Analyze a character’s traits, dominant and subordinate.

 

3.      Create sense memories and back-stories for characters.

 

4.      Analyze the relationships between characters.

 

5.      Analyze the motivation of characters.

 

6.      Analyze a character’s speech patterns to determine appropriate tempo and tone.

 

7.      Improve acting skills by integrating the above objectives into performance.

 

8.      Respond to a scene and other characters authentically, even when there is no script on which to rely.

 

Work in this class will focus on the process as well as the product.  Students are encouraged to take creative risks, demonstrate commitment to the class work and to team members, and provide appropriate constructive feedback to their peers as part of their own learning process and as a contribution to the cooperative learning model.

 

COURSE TEXT

 

There are no textbooks required for this class; however, you may be required to obtain/purchase the plays from which your performance scenes are taken.  Also, a blank journal or notebook is required.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

 

Respect for others at all times.  A “safe” environment promotes an honest exchange of ideas.  Openness and willingness to share are highly values as learning tools in this course.  Rules of common courtesy are observed uniformly.

 

Preparation.  A cooperative learning context relies on the commitment of each class member.  Your acting partners are counting on you.  A responsible approach to memorization, blocking and out-of-class rehearsals is essential.  Wear comfortable and appropriate clothing that will allow you easily to engage in warm-up exercises. No bare feet will be allow in the theatre. Wear closed toe and heel shoes.  Not hats will be allowed, unless appropriate to character.

 

Commitment to attendance is vital.  Since we only meet once a week, your presence in each class is crucial.

 

EVALUATION

 

The following components compose your final grade in this course.

 

Class Participation                                 50 pts

Performance Scenes                         30 pts

Rehearsal Journal                         20 pts

 

TOTAL POINTS                                 100 pts

 

 

 

·        Class participation is evaluated based on the following:

·        Attendance.  Consistent attendance demonstrates a commitment to scene work and to other cast members.  On the flip side, lateness, early exits from class and unexcused absences all affect the class participation grade, since all of these impact the quality and quantity of a student’s class participation.

·        Productive use of in-class rehearsal time.

·        Willingness to take creative risks as demonstrated in the student’s approach to scene work; the student’s ability to take direction and explore alternative choices; and the student’s participation in improvisations.

·        Preparedness, including memorization; incorporation of blocking and previous directions and feedback; and written work

·        Commitment to rehearsal partners, as demonstrated by the student’s faithfulness toward out-of-class rehearsals; availability to rehearsal partners; and willingness to cooperate with rehearsal partner’s suggestions and creative choices

·        Cooperation.  Theatre is by definition a “team sport”

·        Attitude.  A positive, constructive attitude is expected toward the material and toward everyone in class.

A         91-100

B+       89-90

B          81-88

C+       79-80

C         71-78

D         65-70

F          below 65

 

In addition, THE STUDENT MUST COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMNETS IN ALL REQUIRED CATAGORIES IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A PASSING GRADE.
