COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course gives the student the theory and the application
in practice of how to select, mount and market a children’s theatre production.
By testing and displaying skills in a practical production situation, the
student will be involved in all phases of mounting a children’s theatre
production with will be performed for Burlington County elementary school
students.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Students will be familiar with the guidelines for directing Children’s
Theatre including emotional truth, visualization, variety, multi-age considerations,
casting and identification, audience participation and theatrical “magic.”
- Students will demonstrate and understanding and ability to fulfill the
role of a actor to the audience of a children’s play.
It is absolutely essential that the actor be able to convince the audience
that he believes in the truth of what he is doing.
- Students will learn as actors of children’s theatre to demonstrate the
almost intangible skill to play to and with and audience.
- Students will understand and accept the responsibility that actors in children’s
theatre have for the spiritual growth of their audience.
- Students will demonstrate and understanding of the guidelines for prop
and costume selection in children’s theatre.
- Students will articulate a response to the rehearsal and performance process.

***Attendance and participation credit will be earned
through arriving ON TIME, prepared to work with the appropriate lines memorized
and props and costumes when required. Students who do
not fulfill these obligations will be docked points.
** Each student will be required to keep a daily
journal documenting the rehearsal and performance experience. Journals
may be hand written but must be legible to the instructor. Journals
are due on December 15, 2004 and may be picked up from the instructor after
final exam week.
* Each student will be required to attend one performance
of a children’s play and write a response paper. The paper should
include the following:
Identify:
Title of the work
Book Author
Lyrics Author (if applicable)
Music Composer (if applicable)
Where the work was performed
Length of the run
Date of Attendance
Content:
What do you think the primary intention of the writer
was?
What was the subject of the work?
How did the actors display emotional truth?
Was visualization than in a play for an adult audience?
How was variety in the production?
Was the play appropriate to a wide age range?
Was degree of audience participation was use?
Discuss the use of space.
Discuss the passage of time.
Discuss the technical elements (lights, costumes,
props, make-up, score). How were they used?
Impact
Discuss how this performance has affected your perspective
of Childrens Theatre and the personal impact of this performance.
