MS Word Annotations
1.0 Hour
Microsoft Word allows you to annotate documents for collaboration with others. Many faculty have also found this feature helpful for grading students' papers. Come and explore how this technique might work for you.
Web Track
The Internet and the World Wide Web (Beginner Level)
1.5 Hours See ETC calendar for class times.
This is a presentation about using the Internet and the World Wide Web to support teaching and learning. It will cover some basic information about the Internet (e-mail, list servers, etc.), but concentrate on demonstrating features of Netscape and the Web. This is mostly a "hands-off" seminar, but will provide enough information for the inexperienced web surfers to get started and the more experienced to continue riding the wave--especially as it relates to teaching and learning.
Web Site Design (Intermediate Level)
2.0 Hours See ETC calendar for class times.
This is a hands-on experience with web page development. Participants will use Netscape Navigator to explore one or two web sites. The exploration will initially be guided and general, but you should be prepared to find resources that will support your courses, interests, and research. You will then cover the basics of creating your own web pages using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). It is designed as a session that you will walk away from with a finished web page, so you should bring your syllabus, assignments, a diskette, and any other material to necessary to complete the project.
Excel Track
Electronic Gradebooks (Beginner / Intermediate Level)
1.5 Hours See ETC calendar for class times.
This is a session to demonstrate how you can use a spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel) to create an electronic gradebook. It will cover some basics of Excel, but concentrate on the features that will help create a gradebook. It is designed as a session that you will walk away from with a finished electronic gradebook file, so you should bring your syllabus, class lists, gradebook, a diskette, and any other material to complete the project. If you have large classes, you would benefit from word processing your students names and/or ID #’s in advance and bringing them on diskette (contact me if you have any questions).
PowerPoint Track
Computer Based Presentations (Beginner Level)
1.0 Hours See ETC calendar for class times.
This is a combination seminar/workshop on using computer presentation technologies. It will demonstrate the possibilities--both current and future--of using hardware such as laptops and LCD projection with software such as PowerPoint to make presentations. Additionally, it will be a hands-on workshop on using basic features of PowerPoint. There may be time for you to progress at your own pace in a lab environment, so bring some ideas for a computer presentation.
Presentation Design (Intermediate Level)
2.0 Hours See ETC calendar for class times.
This is a hands-on experience designing and creating a classroom presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint. Participants will use clip-art, text and drawing tools to develop a curriculum based presentation. The workshop will initially be guided and general, but you should be prepared to work on your own to create a PowerPoint presentation. It is designed as a session that you will walk away from with a finished presentation, so you should bring a diskette, and any other material necessary to complete the project.
Advanced and Specialized Classes
2+ Hours
Advanced or specialized classes on any topic are available by appointment only for groups of 3 to 5 people. Please gather a few of your colleagues and contact Martin Hoffman with a list of topics and times that would be good for you!
