ETC Resources - Smart Karts

Smart Kart Instruction Manual

00. BCC Smart Karts consist of a standard A/V cart, with a surge suppressing power strip, a laptop computer, a data projector and all of the necessary cables and peripherals to make them fully functional classroom presentation centers.  All of the equipment is secured to the cart with industry accepted security hardware.  To the right you should see a picture of a Smart Kart in use.  There are Smart Karts available at Pemberton, Mt. Laurel, Willingboro and in Mt. Holly.  You must reserve a Kart if you intend to use one.  Contact Video/Media Services (ext. 1225) to reserve the equipment.

Training in the use of this equipment is available from the Educational Technology Center (ext. 7782).

To the left you should see the front, rear and side view of a Smart Kart in storage.  When you pick-up or return a Smart Kart everything you need should fit neatly on the shelves of the cart itself.  Please do not attempt to remove items from the Smart Kart or connect peripherals unless you have first spoken to Educational Technology, Video/Media Services or OIT.  Please return the Smart Kart to its designated storage place, in a neat and timely fashion, as soon as you are finished with it.
02. After retrieving the equipment from storage, and wheeling it to your classroom, you are ready to begin the equipment set-up procedure.  Step one in setting up the Smart Kart is to plug in the power cord, which goes from the cart to a wall outlet.  This cord should be neatly wrapped around the surge suppresser/power strip assembly on the left side of the Smart Kart.  The cord, when full unwrapped, is about ten feet long.  It should be plugged into a three prong grounded outlet.  Please be careful that no one trips over this cord, and that it is not pulled or used to pull the equipment.  When unplugging the cord after use, please grasp it by the plug itself, do not pull on the wire.  Please wrap it up neatly when finished, as a courtesy to your colleagues. 03.
Surge Supressor
At this point the the surge suppresser light should be on.  The light shows whether the surge suppresser is operating properly.  Surge supressors do wear out after time.  The Smart Kart may still operate normally, even if the surge supressor is burned out, but it is not protected from voltage spikes and surges.
04. At this time you will want to point the projector (by turning the Smart Kart) at the projection screen on the wall and pull the screen down.  If your classroom does not have a projection screen, a blank, preferably white, wall will do.  You should also remove the lens cap from the projector if you have not already done so. The next step in setting up the equipment is to gently lift the laptop computer off of the cart and place it on the instructor's desk.  Do not turn on any of the equipment yet, however! 05.
Smart Kart Umbilicus
You will notice that the laptop is connected to the Smart Kart with an "umbilicus" consisting of at least three wires: the security cable, the power cable and the video cable.  There may also be other cables added from time to time.  Please be careful that no one trips over this umbilicus, and that it is not pulled or used to pull the equipment.  The umbilicus is approximately five feet long.
06. If you will be using the Smart Kart to connect to the Internet, you will need some additional equipment, consisting of a PCMCIA Ethernet card, an adapter and a cable.  This equipment is available upon request.

The Ethernet cable must be plugged into a network jack in your classroom.  If your classroom is not equipped with a network jack, you can still use the smart cart for presentations, but not for connecting to the 'Net.  Please contact OIT if you need to know which locations are equipped with network jacks.

RearProjector Main Power Switch    TopProjector Lamp Power Switch
Once everything is connected and plugged in, you can begin turning on the equipment power.  On the rear of the projector locate and depress the main projector power switch (the "POWER" indicator should turn red at this point).  On the top of the projector locate and press the lamp power switch, labeled "ON" and marked with a " | " (the "LAMP" indicator should light, and the "POWER" indicator should turn green at this point).
08. The location of the laptop power switch may vary from model to model.  It is usually located above the F3 key on the laptop.  It is usually marked with a stylized 1 inside a 0.  The symbol On / Off Symbol is commonly used today to signify "on / off" where 1=on and 0=off.  Once you turn the laptop on by pressing this button, it should begin to boot-up and you should see whatever is on your laptop screen projected on the wall.  If there is no image projected but the projector is on, or if there is an image projected but the laptop screen is blank, you can "toggle" through the various combinations on the laptop until you get an image both on the laptop and from the projector.
This is done by pressing F3 Key while holdingFn Key down.
You should never have to press Fn+F3 more than three times.

Projector Zoom and Focus
At this time you should focus the projector using the manual focus knob on the top of the lens.  If you notice that the image is flickering or the desktop screen seems to be cut-off on any edge, you may need to synchronize the projector to the laptop.

Auto Sync ButtonThe easiest way to do this is by pressing and releasing the "AUTO SYNC" button on the projector control panel.

10. You should now be ready to begin using the Smart Kart as a valuable teaching tool, but you are not done yet!  Please follow the links below to learn more about Smart Karts at Burlington County College. Thank you very much for taking the time to follow these links. Smart Kart in Classroom Use
