Dear Student:

WELCOME to Math 075 – the internet version of Elementary Algebra!  My name

is Diane Veneziale, the instructor for this course.  I am a full-time mathematics instructor here at the college with an office in the Academic building #324, Pemberton.  I can be reached by e-mail directly from the course site or via dvenezia@bcc.edu. By phone you may reach me at either 856.222.9311 or 609.894.9311, ext. 6517. (This extension will be changing to 1515 soon) For technical support, please e-mail www.aw.com/coursecompass or phone 1.800.677.6337.

There are a few essentials necessary for success in this course:

·        The first is that you will need internet access.  Please allow approximately 30 minutes on or before the first day to download the plug-ins required.

·        The second is the textbook and student access kitIntroductory Algebra (with MyMathLab and Interact Tutorial CD Rom), Seventh Edition, by Lial, Hornsby, and McGinnis, 2002, Addison Wesley (Pearson Education, Inc.)

The ISBN numbers are as follows:

ISBN 0321205146 – textbook bundled together with access kit – OR –

ISBN 032119991X – the standalone version of just the student access kit, if buying a used textbook.

·        The last necessity for success is hard work and diligence.  In the course  syllabus I have listed several options available for use within the framework of this course that will enhance your success with the material.  Use them all

if necessary!

How do you start?

·        Please purchase the textbook and student access kit as mentioned above.  You may contact the distance education office located in the Pemberton library (ILRC # 107) during regular business hours for course specifics, if necessary.  Mrs. Susan Espenshade, distance learning coordinator, at extension 7790 or

e-mail sespenshade@bcc.edu, will have sample tests available.

·        To register and start the enrollment process, each student must go to the website, www.mymathlab.com.  After selecting the textbook from the list of MyMathLab titles, the student enters the unique code shown on his or her Student Access Card as well as the ID (listed below) for this course. The access code is an individual course-specific 6-word code needed for registering.  Then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the registration process.

·        Each course has a unique course ID.  This course’s ID is veneziale27402.  All students must enter the ID number after they register.

·        Please allow approximately 30 minutes to download the plug-ins necessary for this course on or before the first day!  The following plug-ins are required:

o       Adobe Acrobat Reader

o       Macromedia Flash Player

o       Shockwave Player

o       InterAct Math plug-in (created by Addison-Wesley)

o       TestGen plug-in

o       RealPlayer

Practice problems and sample tests are online, with audio lessons as well.

Weekly assignments are listed in the syllabus and must be sent/given to the instructor before a unit test can be taken. You will find the syllabus online in the “Course Information” section.

All assignments are to be either mailed or delivered to the address below.  This isdifferent than the address listed in the syllabus because my schedule is such that I am in Mt. Laurel four days a week this semester.  Include a self-addressed stamped envelope for every assignment for quick and easy return.

To be successful, please follow these guidelines:

·        Learn the material via audio lessons online, textbook readings and sample

problems, additional help through the college math labs or Addison-Wesley, and/or by making an appointment for individual help with me.

·        Practice problems given online

·        Do the weekly assignments listed in the syllabus and turn in to the instructor, including a self-addressed stamped envelope.  These assignments will be corrected and mailed back to you for your review and corrections, if necessary.  These are to be submitted weekly!  Try not to fall behind!

·        There are sample (post) tests following each chapter online that provide additional practice before each test.  It is strongly recommended that you try these before taking a test!

·        Come to either test center to take each of the 4 tests and the final exam (multiple choice), when all of the necessary work has been completed for each.  77% accuracy is required for each of the 4 tests (23 correct out of 30) and 70% accuracy on the final exam (21 out of 30).

If your e-mail address should change during the course of the semester, please contact Addison Wesley technical support at 1.800.677.6337 for help to correct it.  If this is not corrected, you will not receive any e-mails or announcements from the instructor.

In closing, I ask that all assignments be submitted on time to Mt. Laurel. These due dates will be announce on the course site.  If WEEK 1’s work is not received by October 1, 2004, I will assume that you are not staying in the course and will withdraw. I wish you much success with learning Algebra.  Don’t forget to phone 1.800.677.6337 for technical support, if necessary.  Good luck!

All my best,

Diane Veneziale
